While Morrison didn't have Jean use her phoenix powers for the first 6 issues of his run- in 120 he did not have Jean become or transform into Phoenix. She simply came out with it. It must have already been there. She was impressed with herself, sure but she wasn't worried.
Jean didn't manifest any phoenix power during Alan Davis' run and the 12 saga- except for a page in the Astonishing X-Men mini- even though she was manifesting the raptor in Seagle/Kelly run and Wolverine guest appearance.
Jean didn't manifest the phoenix during Lobdells interim run either- when she had to lead a team against Magneto- even though she manifested the phoenix throughout the beginning of Revolution and in the SFC and X-Men Forever mini.
So it doesn't necessarily mean that Jean had been reset or it means that she has- every other run by several writers.
When Jean began manifesting the phoenix raptor in Uncanny 381- they didn't mention that she had been manifesting the raptor in recent years. She just came out with it and said she was Phoenix- and her teammates reacted.
Do we really want Jean to loose her codename and power again? I mean its distressing to see some fans who use to be the most devout Jean fans and use to advocate for Jean keeping her Phoenix-ness- and argue that she should never have lost it and argue against retcons and even help us with a petition once advocating Jean keeping her Phoenix name and imagery when we thought she had lost it (a petition that got over 200 signatures)- Now arguing that she should loose it.
If Jean lost her codename again- wouldn't a lot of Jean/Phoenix websites have to change their names. It would be such a hassle.
I don't understand why Jean's current portrayal would cause some fans to turn their backs on Jean.
Jean still has her temper and her compassion. She is very powerful. She's not perfect and shes not with Scott anymore. She may not be as lively but she has been in her X-Treme guest appearances and New isn't a lively book anyways. Jean may have ravaged Emma's mind but she did so in Claremonts original run too. Rachel nearly killed Selene once and wanted to kill Beyonder. New X-Men Jean hasn't been out of character with her wicked side, imo. In one of Jean's time slips in the original run- Jean hunts naked men with animal masks/horns while riding a horse named satan and she found herself wanting to kill the men. Claremonts stuff use to be just as head trippy.
And why would we want to collectively ignore the continuity from Seagles run and Revolution and X-Men Forever and New X-Men- where Jean has embraced her Phoenix mantle and re-connected with her phoenix power.
Now it would be ignoring a lot of continuity to take away her Phoenix-ness. The Phoenix represents her Omega level psychic powers honed to their sharpest edge and is the physical manifestation of her powers while Jean is also the house where the Phoenix force (whatever it is) lives and always returns too. Jean dies to return.
Its obvious that Claremont was talking about Jean. There has only been one "phoenix force" anways. Jean is Phoenix now and she was the original Phoenix so it only makes sense for Claremont to be talking about her. We all know that Claremont sees Jean as the original Phoenix and one with the force like he wrote in the Classic backstories and her Wolverine guest appearances and tried to write her in the beggining of Revolution. In the past Claremont has said that the Phoenix was designed soley for Jean. Originally the Phoenix was Jean's powers mutated by solar radiation and not a force anyways.
And I agree with Perceval- Its odd how Rachel fans always say that Rachel wasn't a rip off of Jean yet they always seem to advocate for her being a rip off of Jean. I can see why Rachel fans would want her to be Phoenix though- partly the same reason we like Jean having it- its cool and a part of her. But Jean is the original and Rachel having the name and power (and other similarities to Jean) does make her partly a rip off- even if she is a homage and Jean's daughter. Its almost funny.
I have no problem with Rachel coming back as long as Jean stays Phoenix. I wouldn't want them both to be Phoenix and I think that would never happen. But worst comes to worst- I could probably accept it.
I agree that I would want the Phoenix to be secondary for a while and focus on Jean's human side.
But whats so wrong with having Phoenix stories. Jean's current subplot is Jean's biggest Phoenix story since the original Saga.
Rachel had Phoenix stories all the time in Excalibur- Her fight with Necrom the Anti-Phoenix and her fight with Galactus etc. There was the whole #52 story and other stories like Cross Time Caper etc had phoenix story elements in them.
Good enough for Rachel- Good enough for Jean.
The Phoenix being commercialized is a good thing- at least in part- because it means that Jean won't loose it. Not for a long time if ever.
