Ok, that was a requesit spoiler space, now on to the good stuff.
The opening sequence of Gandalf and the balrog.....
How amazing was that? that my friends, is how you start a movie. The slow pan over the misty mountains with the low audible rumble of gandalf and the balrog, then going inside the mountain to see the confrontation...breathtaking to say the least. And the fall! what a fall indeed! This scene got me so pumped for the rest of the film. my mind just kept saying "how f--king cool is this!" Now we know what lies at the bottom of a bottomless pit.
Sam and frodo continue on their journey. EW as frodo did an excellent job of showing the increasing infl;uence of the ring, and SA as Sam was just as great in showing Sam's transformation from companion to guardian, because he has really taken over the job of the rest oif the fellowship, and as any reader of the book will know, if it wasn't for the determination and courage of Sam, then Frodo would have gotten nowhere.
The next wonder was Gollum. I knew he was going to be good, but he was so much better than anything i expected. He makes Jar Jar Binks from Phantom Menace look like a finger puppet. The scene where gollum confronts smeagol and they argue with himself, that scene alone deserves an Oscar. Andy Serkis's performance was terrific. The impossible is now officially possible.
The three Hunter's journey into Rohan was well done, and Gimli was hilarious. I even loved the added scenes with Arwen. The film ended with their relationship on a cliff hanger, which does add to the filmic quality of the story.
Now to the Rohirrim.
Theoden was perfect. he was Theoden!
Miranda Otto gave a storng perfomrnace as Eowyn, and i was delighted to see her bring the Shield-maiden to life.
Eomer was great, i wish he was in it more, but i look forward to his bigger role in part three (the same with faramir)
i loved that they kept Hama in the story - for those who dont know the book he was the guard of the door to theoden's Hall of Meduseld.
Grima Wormtounge came off well and was very unsettleing and creepy.
(More to come in a few minutes.......)
