(.... from before...)
Chris Lee as Saruman was in top form again, that man - being the Tolkien expert he is - can do no wrong in that role.
Gandalf the White's return, where at first we think he is Saruman, was straight out of the book and i am so happy they included that aspect of his return because it was so well done. My only dissapointment is that Gandalf was in the film so little, but once again i know he will be around alot in the next film. Sir Ian McKellan just demands your attention whenever he is on screen.
Treebeard had been spoken down of by some in their reviews, but i thought he came off well, i would just liked to have seen the scenes that they cut out of him with Merry and Pippin.
Speaking of which i thought Billy and Dom did a great job of showing the progression of these two characters, the scene where they convince the Ents to fight was superb. (i am running out of superlatives already!
)
I look forward to more merry and pippin next time.
Haldir's return was good, even if it strayed from one of the key premises of the book (the fact that the elves conceed it is now the age of men and decide that it is men who must fight - even though Celeborn and the dwarves fight in Mirkwood, but i digress), and his death really stung me. But it was an excellent peice of film making, so i dont mind.
Gimli and Legolas just improve with age like a fine wine or port. Their interplay was spot on, and the ways they both welcome back the then-thought-to-be-dead Aragorn had me smiling all over, especially Orlando's delivery of "You're late."
Viggo was perfect as Aragorn, and his character deepens with each passing moment, and i loved the flash to the future with Arwen at his grave - he certainly looked the King, even in death.
And lastly to Faramir. Being one of my most beloved characters i was hopeing he would remain as i saw him, and with David Wenham in the role i knew he was off to a good start. Faramir's scene with frod would have to be drasticaly changed as they are mostly a chapter of dialogue, and i felt the changes worked. The scenes with the Nazgul in Osgiliath were something special indeed.
The closing dialogue between frodo and sam was a great note to end with, as was gollum's hints of Shelob.
In closing, i loved the film, and i can't wait for the respective journey's to Gondor and Mordor in what will be beyond all doubt nest year's best film, if not the best film of the trilogy, "The Return of The King".
Dave.
(how was that Dini?)
