Swt - Sing out, sister! :D

Fenix - You're right that the fight has really just begun. That's why I'm not planning on buying a tux anytime soon! (Of course, I would need a man to marry FIRST, but that's just a piffling little detail, no?)

You know what? I sometimes think it's not the "moral" objections to gays getting married that's the "real" issue.

It's the economics.

Legal rights, property and inheritance, tax exemptions, benefits both federal and private...all the stuff offered to the traditional man and woman couple...imagine now being offered to a whole subset of the population that never before had a crack at such rights and privileges.

I don't mean to say that the gay population of the USA is comprabable in size to the straight. Gays are in the minority. But that minority would then enjoy the same perks as the majority, and I don't think the government, insurance companies, health care institutions, and so forth want to see that happening anytime soon.

And when you think about it, marriage has its origin in power and economics. Marriages were not always romantic, one soul pledging to another eternal love ceremonies. It was about cementing power, acquiring wealth, and promoting social stability through that. While I believe love has existed since humans learned to walk upright (maybe even before!) the concept of marrying for love alone is a modern invention.
