"On the inheritance and guardianship issues for gay couples, can't they draw up a will saying my life partner gets my house, etc etc, and he gets guardianship of the kid that I adopted to get around the no-marriage privleges? Or are there laws that blood relatives get first dibs anyway?"

Yes, a gay man have write a will saying that his life partner gets his money, house, etc, and guardianship of his kids.

Most gay men who I know who have kids didn't adopt. They had biological kids. Many from previous relationships with women (some where even married), others made special arrangements with women.

While I don't think anyone would literally have a husband of a week, I can see someone having a husband of the year. Not all gay men, but many are like that.

As for the heterosexual equivalent, yes, these people do have kids. All it takes is a failure of birth control or as I am sure in some cases, they may not have bothered.

I've known men who had kids by multiple women and women who have had kids by multiple men.
