Well I guess I'll have to be the one to say no without any catches from a religious/moral/natural law point of view. I normally try to stay out of these things, but for the sake of discussion...
I haven't read the whole thread yet...but did anyone bring 'natural law' into this?
The main reason Catholics are "supposed" to not agree with being gay is because it goes against how we were created and how we were MEANT to be. (Homosexuality and being gay are actually different from the Catholic point of view.)
We just see Homosexuality as a defect for lack of a better term and those who do have it do to nature/genes or nurture/enviroment are called to live a life of celibacy. Homosexuality is not condemned or anything because it is not something you can control.
Being gay means you act on your homosexuality and is condemned because you do have a choice.
Ok now on seperation of Church and State. I do think people DO sometimes fail to understand what seperation of Church and State really mean. Bush funding church programs violates this, but having your beliefs and values determing your view on issues DOES NOT.
Of course you won't see too many politicians doing it and if they are, they hide behind "economic" and other such issues only and don't even mention it.
Politicians are polticae expedient. They will generally do whatever they can do keep and promote their position. They represent the people, but the people aren't always right.
I can understand where people come from with the "holier than thou" attitude. However clergy/religious/etc do seem to have a role as the Prophets did. We might not "like" what they are saying as no one likes being told they are wrong, but they must say it. Priests can not limit themselves to simply put a smile on your face jokes and stories during their sermons.
Now everyone please be rather gentle....I'm probably the only person speaking on this side of the issue and I only have a semester and almost a half or so of high school freshmen theology to back me up.
