"But the United States of America? One to one seems rule of thumb. You could have as many spouses as you want, just one at a time, please. (Utah wouldn't have been granted statehood if the Mormons hadn't agreed to give up the practice of polygamy if I recall from college history classes.)"

It's also the rule of thumb in the US for marriage to be defined soley to a man and a woman.

Every arguement that you have against allowing polygamy could also be applied to not allowing gay marriages!

It's against tradition!

But being against tradition, is not a bad thing.

Polygamy does not cause inbreeding, in and off itself. Many men have children outside their marriage, and studies have shown that 10% of men who think that they are the father of a child aren't.

Most of the people who can truly afford to be polygamous are those of high status. People in general are attracted to power and status and money. If polygamy were legal here, I bet Monica would have had no problem marrying Bill Clinton, and Hillary probably would have remained with Bill.

Remember that in even in our society, certain subsets don't really marry for romantic love. In politics and in show business, the relationships are based on what people can get out of it.

Sex caan be a powerful cementer of relationships, and people will at times do all sorts of things for those that they are intimately involved.
