"Truthfully, don't give a darn about how many percentages of Christians there are in this country. If it is for your own personal edification, hey, that's on you or not. My point has always been, if you actually want to see change occur, you darn well better start caring about that, since the nation looks a lot more like Kansas than it does California."

That's debtable. California is by far the most populous state with at least 50 million people. If it were a country it would be the world's 6th biggest economy. It has way more people than Kansas.

Brooklyn, a borough of New York City, has more people than the state of Alabama.

Most people live either on the West Coast, in a strip from Seattle to San Diego, or on the East Coast from Boston to Miami.

The only big population centers in the middle of the country would probably be in Texas or Illinois.

Even George Bush made Trent Lott step down as senate majority leader when his statements about preferring the 40s, stood a chance of harming Bush and other Republicans in all the state with major electoral votes (California, Texas, New York, Florida, etc). Bush could have kissed the hispanic vote goodbye in those states, and bush can not afford to lose Texas and Florida. Also, a lot of moderate white Republicans would have withdrawn their support as well (the 40s implies susbtantially reduced rights for women's and gays, as well as non whites)
