Don't know if I can rank the list of all time favorites into a "top 10", aside from the first one, so, in no particular order...
Casablanca, for reasons mentioned above. Perfect movie.
Metropolis (1926) Fritz Lang's masterpiece, still one of the greatest sci fi films of all time, and the high point of German Expressionism. Also one of the most infuential. James Whale used a lot of it's German Expressionism, and more recently, the film's climax has been payed homage to by such films as Blade Runner, Batman, The Crow, and even Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ever notice how all four of those films have the same climax atop a Gothic Church? Now you know why.
Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein. Putting these two together, as they work best as a unit. Aside from the obvious cultural impact, these two James Whale films would be highly influential on movies to come (including Citizen Kane). Aside from the great story, and great acting (especially Boris Karloff), this is a visual feast of Expresionist set design. Whale also managed to produce the Cinemascope effect two decades before Cinemascope was invented, creating a sense of depth (especially in Bride) entirely with brilliant use of lighting and sets.
Night of the Hunter. The one time Charles Laughton was in the Director's chair. He should have done it more often. Don't want to give much away with this 1955 cult film, just stick with it through the weird pacing at the beginning. Once things really start happening you'll understand why it's paced that way. It's all about building a very haunting tension, and just when you think the tension's built as far as it can go, it builds MORE. Another one filmmakers pay homage to. The love/hate tattoos turned up in both The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Do The Right Thing, as Scorcese used aspects of it in his Cape Fear remake.
2001, A Space Oddesy: Kubrick's masterpeice. Well, except for maybe...
A Clockwork Orange. Wow. Just wow. Makes an unusual, but great, double feature with...
Cabaret. Try it. They mesh well. Think musicals are light and fun and unsubstancial? Try THIS one, set in Berlin just before the Nazis take over. Bob Fosse at his dark best, right down to that chilling final shot. And, over 30 years later, it's still topical, now more than ever. If you've never seen it, go rent it. Now.
The first Star Wars trilogy. Doing for our culture what Great Mysths should do.
The Wizard of Oz. Best All Ages movie ever. You love it as a kid, and appreicate it as an amazing film as an adult. It's taken all these years, and the Harry Potter movies, for the industry to give it a legitimate challenger. Still haven't quite figured out why the Pink Floyd thing works so well...
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Yes, there have been better westerns, but this is still my favorite. Very controversial in it's time, not to mention it's influence on late 60s fashion, giving the flower children an outlaw macho model (Yes, you can blame this for panchos becoming fashionable). Still, beautifully shot, perfect score, and where I think I got my taste for epic quest stories.
