Recent Events
Right now I am enjoying being a substitute teacher. I really like intereacting with high school age kids. I subbed one time at a middle school, and the experience left me with a greater appreciation of high school students. Granted, I still have a general disdain for freshmen.
So far I've mainly subbed for either P.E. teachers or Math teachers. Both are really fun. I like it when teachers leave work and leave stuff for me to do (like actually teach!) I don't like feeling like a babysitter. P.E. is fun because sometimes you get to play with the students. I passed football with some football players and had a good time. The only bad thing that happened was when I hit one of the boys in the crotch with the football (from across the gym). He fell to the gym floor and layed there for about 5 minutes. I was horrified. Luckily no other teacher or administrator was in the gym.
Math is fun to teach because you get to work problems on the board and go around helping the students. This I like. It's also fun just to socialize with the kids.
I ask kids questions about what drugs they use, and this seems to always surprise them. I'm interested in this and wish I could hand out surveys.
One time a student asked me if someone could eat pot, and I thought they were trying to stump me. I told them about using pot in brownies. The looks on their faces alerted me to the idea that I probably should have never went there. That I classify as a mistake.
I have yet to give any student detention but I have almost got detention myself a few times. I keep getting mistook for a student.
One day I decided to go back to my room during break. I wanted to prepare for the last period and I got stopped by a teacher. I got yelled at for being in the hallway lol If only that was the first and last time that happened (but no...).
I do have problems with discipline. I'm quiet and don't like to yell. I think it surprises students that I do not automatically go into the stereotypical role of a teacher. I don't want to have to play "the game." But I've learned sometimes I have to conform to these roles and just play it. Though I resent it.
One of my best days was when I let students have a debate. It was in an english class and I just let them discuss anything they wanted. They went through the line; politics, gay marriage, abortion, death penalty, etc. It was cool to see young people discussing important social issues. I got to play as the moderator and I would also give additional information when needed.
A downside to being a sub. teacher/or a teacher for that matter, is running into students everywhere. I run into kids all the time. I cannot hide from them. Though I admit sometimes it's cool to get recognized by all these young people.
I've even entertained the idea about becoming a high school teacher. I could go through a graduate program that works as an alternative certification program, but I'm not certain of that. It's just an idea at this stage.
