I am not sure it was so sad... it's more like a turning point, I consider myself a big marvel comics fan, I have been buying comics for more than 20 years... not only for Jean, but she was always my big time favorite...but now she isn't around, everything about her have been changed , given to other characters, and the x-men became something I don't enjoy reading anymore, if you are not a big fans of cyclop(the new version) or emma frost(the new version as well, the 27 years old omega level bombshell with an heart of gold) I don't think there is much for you in the x-men, as I said Jean was always number one for me and I will grave moments where she shine in the comics, but before the X-men were always an ensemble cast, it was a family, every single one of them will have a storyline and time in the limelight.... now the story are curving continuity to make cyclop and emma frost look cool...the others are wallpaper....

I used to love Jean as Phoenix...the firebird effect, the attitude... but now it make me uneasy, the Phoenix have been given to virtually everybody, it's not special to Jean anymore, with the introduction of that fenghi girl it seem that the phoenix had always been after redhead, Jean is now just one of them...before it was Jean being the phoenix, now it's all about the phoenix using Jean carcasse...Jean is one of numerous host who is now said to never have been able to control it...even if Jean come back in let's say 5 years, with the Phoenix, everybody will be rolling their eyes thinking "oh boring the phoenix using Jean again....why the other heroes get to have their own power and Jean now need to borrow hers...everybody think jean without the phoenix is a nobody...look at it that way, if you have a fight between Jean and Emma Frost everyone will say Jean win with the phoenix but will lose as just Marvel girl....

I think I have been more than patient, but when I read Brevoort comments I realized things were not going to change, when they have so little respect for their fans, their characters and the continuity.
And to make someone like me decide to move on they really had to push hard, I do think a lots of others Jean fans and x-men fans (maybe older fans who still want to be reminded why they've been buying comics for so many years) will move on as well now...
